Powerful canons will once again guard over the Great Belt

21. April 2016 | Nyborg Slot

The Museums of Eastern Funen will move the two big cannons from the palace square at Nyborg Castle to the Star Redoubt near the beach, so it will once again be clear to passersby, what a high priority was once given to the surveillance of the Great Belt.

Since 2015, the over 350-year-old star redoubt has been visible again. But something was lacking: cannons. Now the huge cannons, each weighing 4.2 tons, will be moved from the palace square to the star redoubt. These are allegedly the very same cannons that once guarded the Great Belt from here. From the moment they are again installed on the star redoubt, they will bear witness to the need, throughout the centuries, for securing the Danish waters and for protecting the strategically important crossing that connected the kingdom, east and west. In this way, another chapter describing Nyborg’s positition at the Heart of the Kingdom of Denmark, and its role as the infrastructural junction of the country, will be made visible.
