The Danehof meets again
20. June 2017 | Nyborg Castle
Preparations for this year’s Danehof in Nyborg have been in full swing for quite a while. (The Danehof Parliament met here in the Middle Ages; now the marking of annual meeting is reason enough for festivities in the whole town.) Once again, Nyborg Castle and the whole area of Nyborg’s historic centre will be turned into a living backdrop for the castle’s and the town’s fantastic history. On the palace square, preparations for the major construction project are underway, but around the castle itself and on the ramparts, knights and jesters, merchants and other medieval folk will meet as usual. Here, you will be able to see, experience, feel, taste and touch history in the Heart of the Kingdom of Denmark, the royal town, Nyborg.
Major jousting tournament
The knights have long since announced that they are coming to Nyborg, where the royal jousting ground will again be the site of hard and dramatic encounters. This year, in addition to the traditional jousting with lances, the knights will again challenge each other to a so-called melée - a fight on horseback, a galloping, mass battle with clubs.
The castle is being rebuilt
The many tents and stands will, this year, be pitched around Nyborg Castle, but in somewhat different placements than in previous years. Nyborg Castle is namely being restored and rebuilt as a modern museum. Now you’ll have a unique opportunity to see the preparations for the reconstruction of the big fortress. The contruction won’t actually start until 2018, but you can hear much more about it during the Danehof.
The historic market town
Ever since the 1200’s, the enterprising market town has been a part of the Danehof, just as purveyors to the King’s Food Cupboard had to provide plenty to eat and drink in the town. The modern-day members of the King’s Food Cupboard do the same today. The market town will be bursting with goods, and for the first time, the Museums of Eastern Funen and the Nyborg Chamber of Commerce will extend the market into Mellemgade St., where we will create the perfect medieval atmosphere in the middle of town. The theme will be: The Seamy Side of the Middle Ages, and members of the public can experience some new initiatives here.
