The restoration of The Mayor’s Yard continues

26. September 2017 | The Mayor's Yard

The second phase of the comprehensive renovation of the Mayor’s Yard includes the facade, the courtyard, the roof and preparations for the new café.

Scaffolding has once more been raised around the old merchant house and mayor’s residence in Nyborg. The whole building complex is getting another facelift as part of investments in culture and heritage in the Municipality of Nyborg. This is the second phase of a comprehensive renovation of the buildings themselves and of the exhibitions.

Last year, the wings off the main building got a new roofs and were whitewashed and painted. The windows were renovated and the chimney to the old iron stove in the yellow kitchen was rebuilt. At the same time, most of the old exhibitions were replaced by completely new ones and reflected a new concept for exhibiitons.

Now the second phase will begin, including renovation of the main building’s facade toward Slotsgade St., a new roof, renovation of the courtyard and preparations for a new café space. The interior is under renewed renovation and new exhibiitions are being established that will tell about the history of Nyborg, in close dialogue with the planned new exhibitions at the castle, when it is renovated, expanded and reopened.

The Mayor’s Yard is an important part of the castle project and sets the stage for the town space around Nyborg Castle. During the years to come, it will also function as a gateway to the castle story. The Mayor’s Yard therefore plays a central role in teaching about history and about the castle project during the coming years, while the castle construction is underway.

In the future, it will be a central and vital part of the overall story, where families can explore their way through history in a way that complements the full impression of visiting Nyborg Castle, but still as an important experience in its own right.

The restoration work is being carried out by the Municipality of Nyborg and the Museums of Eastern Funen by the architect firm, Vaag, by the masonry firm, Aage Pedersen & Son, Aps, the painting firm, Kirkeløkke, by CMO Technique and by the carpentry firm of Keldhermann A/S. The electrical work is being done by Langeskov-Ullerslev Electricians and by Nyborg Electricians.
